What is a registered agent?
A registered agent (also called a resident agent or statutory agent in some states) is an individual or legal entity designated to receive service of process (SOP) and official legal documents on behalf of a business from the state. Every state requires business entities registered there to identify a registered agent with a physical street address in that state, available during normal business hours.
Why can't I just be my own registered agent?
You can in most states, but your name and physical address become part of the public record, you must be available at that address during all normal business hours, and you risk being served with legal papers in front of customers or employees.
